Earth Spirits by John Curtis Crawford
Anywhere roots meet rocks, expect to see wizened, gnarly, gnome-like creatures peeking out of tree hollows and rock crevices. They often have long noses or pointed ears, sometimes they have fur, and always they have lots of wrinkles. The Fairies tell us these vaguely ominous-looking creatures are a part of the Faerie world as well. They are Earth spirits whose job it is to tend all roots and the creatures who wriggle around underground, chewing dead leaves into compost. These Fairies don't get out much, so they love to live in structures that look like a jumbled pile of logs and stones from the outside, but are warm, secure, and well lit - and just a little above the ground.
