Mother Earth by John Curtis Crawford
She squats rather than sits on the stone at the edge of the garden. Her skin is the color of earth, of rich, loamy soil; her hair hangs in green tangles like moss. Flowers adorn her, acorns hang like beads around her neck, squirrels sit on her shoulders, butterflies rest on her head, and hummingbirds swarm around her. If you are fortunate enough to look into her eyes, she'll take your breath away, just for a moment, while she gives you the secret key to life. And then she laughs, the earth rumbling beneath her. This is the Earth Mother in her most natural form, bursting with life. In a little while she will take on her winged Fairy form and stroll home to have supper at sunset but for now she's enjoying her earthiness. As Earth Mother, she can become anything she wants, as long as she has the seed.
