Workshop - Make your own Fairy House May 21 - 24, 2015
A Fairy House Adventure:
The Ritual and Craft of making a home for the Fairies
Thurs, May 21 - Sun, May 24, 2015
Fairy Woodland Studio, Newport OR
"Everyone always wants to know 'How do you make fairy houses?' And what they’re thinking is 'How do you perform the craft operations of making a fairy house?' and in truth, that’s the simplest part of it. The thing that’s the most important is the mindset with which you approach it. Because we’re not just trying to make a model – we’re trying to create a living creature, for all intents and purposes. This is going to be a Fairy House. It’s not a bird house, it’s not a miniature house; it’s a Fairy House and it’s intended for the habitation of Fairies."John Curtis Crawford from

A Fairy House Adventure: The Ritual and Craft of Making a Home for the Fairies
From backyard gardens, to wild places, lovers of art and the
natural world have long fashioned miniature dwelling places for Fairies and
other nature spirits. Whether whimsical or deeply metaphysical, these creations
offer a home for the mythic imagination, a place for magic to emerge from the
ecosystem and create a gateway to allow enchantment to pass into our lives.
In the Fairy House Adventure workshop, we will gather twigs, stones, and sand,
engaging the spirit energy of each in conversation and discovering how the
spirit guardians of different materials guard the gateway to home. We will
bring our materials back to the studio and fashion a house, working to keep
alive the life history of the twigs and stones of which it is constructed. We’ll
learn John Crawford's unique sculptural process of working in a bed of sand to mold the walls,
using the twigs as a form; then we’ll form the roof from real shake shingles.
