Dragons & Drought

A Dragon sculpture becomes an alternative to grass in an award winning garden.

The creators of an award-winning Southern California garden were struggling with enforced water cut-backs and rising costs. They wanted to keep their yard peaceful, beautiful and interesting but knew they had to find ways to accomplish their goals that didn't require water.

One day, looking out the window at an area where they had torn out the lawn and pool, they had a vision of a dragon rising from the earth. They asked John if he could make their vision happen.

It took a couple of months and a lot of experimentation with materials to find a solution. This fierce looking but ultimately sweet dragon now rests on a soft bed of pine needles, in a river of stones, as though erupting from the earth. The three pieces John created - the head, body, and tail - are covered with a sea glass mosaic. (The sea glass was gathered over many years by one of the garden's creators.)

By the way, the Dragon's eyes are focussed on the Fairy Houses that sit in and under the Torrey Pine trees just out of range in the photo.
